Off to Mauritius: A Photography Adventure

I'm off to Mauritius! Sunshine, sand, and the most vibrant and beautiful birds are ready to be photographed for potential new oil paintings.

Coin de Mire - Mauritius 2007

This will be my third trip to this stunning island (my brother and his family lived there for ten years) and I'm lucky to be traveling with my youngest daughter to celebrate her graduation from university. We love giving the gift of travel and adventure to our daughters for these significant milestones.

Travel Is a Gift For A Lifetime Of Memories

When they finished school, and as a preferred way of celebrating this significant milestone, instead of 'schoolies', my eldest daughter traveled to India with my husband, while my youngest chose Spain and Portugal for her after-school trip.

I accompanied my eldest to Italy when she graduated from Architecture and Design as a Graduate Architect,  and since she decided to pursue further studies in Yacht Design at the Milan Politechnico, I helped settle her into university digs in Milan. A girls' trip with both daughters for two weeks in Italy was wonderful, though leaving Ishbel behind for a year was tough on this soft hearted mama...lucky I visited her again half way through. Italy, how I love you.

Now it's Bonnie's turn...

Bonnie graduates university this week with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Interior Architecture.  She was just 6 years old during our last trip to Mauritius and she wants to experience it now as an adult. I’m thrilled she made this choice, as there’s so much to see and do on the island.

New Camera - New Possibilities

I've always traveled with a "real" camera, not just an Iphone, enjoying Canon and Olympus DSLR systems for many years. However, I was getting tired of lugging around spare lenses and switching them out for different scenes. We travelled to Greece last year  for a sailing trip and I barely used my Olympus due to the inconvenience of changing lenses on a yacht.

For two years, I’ve been reading reviews and waiting for a new model in Sony's well-regarded RX10 series. Unfortunately, I learned that the series has been officially discontinued. When I saw that stock was running low and found a great deal with Sony,  I decided to purchase the older model.

It's from 2017, yes old technology, but its stood the test of time, and I'm so glad I secured one. With its fast autofocus and incredible zoom, it’s a solid all-in-one compact camera—no more lens swapping! That’s a game changer.

I’ve only taken it on one major outing so far, on a recent trip to Margaret River and Augusta in our beautiful south-west of Western Australia,  and while I have a lot to learn, I’m confident my two decades of hobby photography will help me adapt quickly.

I mainly bought this camera for bird photography—the zoom is incredible! Here’s a recent photo (not zoomed in) showcasing the detail and depth of field. Believe me, Blue Fairy Wrens are incredibly fast!

This is with uncropped zoom...and it did a nice job with a still life setup too. All without swapping a single lens. Joy.

I hope to capture some great reference photos during our Mauritian holiday. While the camera is slightly heftier compared to my Olympus OMD mirrorless system, I won’t be weighed down by extra lenses.

I’m excited to see what I can achieve with this camera, and I hope you’ll return in December to see what I showcase on the blog.

Blue Skies Ahead!
